Making Homemade Ice Cream in a Baggie

Making Homemade Ice Cream in a Baggie

Are you looking for a fun activity to do with your children or grandchildren that they will enjoy and probably ask to do over and over again? This might be the perfect activity for all to enjoy. Ice cream --- everybody loves ice cream --- especially kids. They will love it even more when they are making their own homemade ice cream treat. As a teacher for 33 years, this was one of the children's favorite activities in the classroom.  As they  make their own single serving of their special treat in their own  baggie, they enjoy watching as the milk turns into creamy soft-serve ice cream. They can hardly wait to eat as the milk slowly solidifies into ice cream. I always provided the children with the recipe and many of the students were excited to share the activity at home with their brothers and sisters.

  .

Ingredients:

1/2 cup milk
4 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Sprinkles, candy topping, or other topping.
1 pint-sized zippered plastic bag
2 cups crushed ice
6 tsp. salt
1 gallon-sized zippered plastic bag
1 long-handled spoon

Instructions:

  1. Add milk, sugar, and vanilla to the pint-sized baggie. Carefully squeeze out all excess air and seal.
  2. Put the crushed ice and salt into the gallon-sized baggie along with the pint-sized baggie from step 1. Squeeze out all excess air and seal.
  3. Shake the baggie until the prepared mixture turns into ice cream --- about 5 minutes.
  4. Carefully remove the pint-sized baggie from the gallon-sized baggie and wipe carefully.
  5. Open the pint-sized baggie and add any additional toppings.
  6. Eat and enjoy --- may want to use a long-handled spoon to eat.
